The Holzer truism posters were produced in 1978 and posted on the streets of Soho in New York City as one of the artist’s first major actions. The posters that remained were then stamped and sold at the artist collective  CoLab’s (Collaborative Projects, Inc.) A More Store. Colab, of which Holzer was an early prominent member was responsible for such pivotal art historical shifts of the late ’70s to mid ’80s as The Manifesto Show (5 Bleecker St., 1979), The Real Estate Show (Delancey St., Jan. 1980), and especially The Times Square Show (201 W 41st, Summer 1980). A  Similar print was displayed as part of Holzer’s first major installation at Franklin Furnace in 1978, the same year the edition is stamped. These Truisms are not alphabetized, and some of them are variations on later posters (eg. “you should raise boys and girls in the same way” later becomes “raise boys and girls the same way”), thus confirming their early date.

Money raised goes to support the Allied Productions, inc. initiative for the ABC NO Rio visual art collection archives project.
