GROUP STATEMENT:
Despite what has been written recently about a dying urban culture, we present a positive outlook for our communities – We are united, strong, and thriving! We have been here a long time and we intend to stay! We are not opposed to positive change and as always we welcome new members to our neighborhood. Change foments vibrancy, and that is what the LES has ALWAYS been about, it has been the attraction and we have NO INTENTION that change and difference be eradicated from our culture. Above all we intend to maintain affordable housing so that we retain the great diversity of our neighborhoods. Just as we intend to retain our libraries and settlement houses we intend to keep our outdoor public social gathering spaces such as gardens, parks, and plazas green and open so that we can continue to meet and mix surviving and , and thriving in our strong individuality as the unique social body for which the Lower East Side has become and will remain a continued attraction. Social spaces and affordable housing are not conflicting interests — they are common goals.
