20 of the limited edition giclée prints by Kembra Pfahler and Gordon Kurtti
The artwork by Gordon Kurtti included in this edition set is titled The Salt Flats – Mining Camp c. 1984. Created as a concept sketch for a performance piece that was never realized, the original
was drawn in oil pastel on paper. The performance was to be included in P.O.O.L. dance company’s FOHO Tell Dreams—a multi-media theater piece presented in 1985 by Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church in the Bowery.
Gordon instead created The Bearded Bride, a short performance featuring a bearded bride in a torn wedding dress, a rocking chair and scissors. Gordon Kurtti died on April 18, 1987 of AIDS related illnesses, two weeks before his 27th birthday. He was prolific and created a substantial body of work as an artist, writer, illustrator and performer and, was a seminal figure in the East Village art scene of the early 1980’s. Though many years have passed since Gordon’s death, we are committed to keeping his genius alive. As guardians of his estate, and with a generous grant from Ted and MaryJo Shen, we are well into the process of documenting and archiving all of his artworks—drawings, paintings, films and poetry. A retrospective exhibition will be presented in 2013 with accompanying catalogue raisonné.
