These rare Kiki Smith prints on paper were made for ‘The Island Show’, a Collaborative Projects, Inc. (CoLab) presentation at the renowned altervative art space The Kitchen in New York City. The artist’s hand screening and stenciling makes each print unique! Some were put on the street as advertisement for the show while the remaining posters were hung in The Kitchen’s gallery. A print from this edition was published in the New York Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) catalogue of Smith’s exhibition ‘Prints, Books & Things’ (Kiki Smith: Prints, Books And Things, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, NY, 2003, cat. no. 31, p. 67, illustrated. 2003 – 2004). A book of the same title was authored by the artist and Wendy Weitman.
An edition by the artist on linen from the same screen (see other listing by same seller) was originally planned for the release of the 1985 book “Abc No Rio: The Story Of A Lower East Side Art Gallery” (ISBN 84-72553). The book, in which the artist is prominently featured, is edited by Alan Moore and Marc Miller. The Island Show is featured in that book with an image of the silkscreen on paper edition on page 156.
Money raised goes to support the Allied Productions, inc. initiative for the ABC NO Rio visual art collection archives project.
