COMING UP:

Allied Productions, Inc. 30th Anniversary!

As Allied develops a broader cooperative management structure for this entirely artist-run organization.

ARCHIVAL PROJECTS
Looking over our 30 year history we continue to develop an archive that is unique to our ideals of collectively artist-run, trans-disciplinary cultural practice.

The Allied Archival Project develops from our implementation of the Abc No Rio archives and ephemera. The Allied Archival Incentive demonstrates our historical relationship to the related material of the No Rio visual art archives entrusted to Allied’s custody since the mid ’80s when No Rio was a sponsored project of this organization. Other related material includes that of the A’s Events Fliers Collection, The Mix Collection, materials relating to Collaborative Projects, Inc (Colab), Franklin Furnace Archives, and other contemporary groupings and activities of the late 20th century. The project is abridged to Allied’s archival initiative of the Naked Eye Cinema – the extension of the film program at Abc No Rio.

Among the myriad group projects flourishing  under Allied’s umbrella is the band Circle X and its artist-member’s edition “Anti-Utopia”, the related prints from the Florida Press, and numerous Allied sponsored Abc No Rio exhibitions including tours to Detroit, Maine, San Francisco, Canada, and Hamburg;  the itinerant Naked Eye Cinema screenings and performances on these travels; the ground-breaking projects  “Miami, The Last Resort” (1989), “The Ultimately Civil Project at Tompkins Square Park” (1985), performances of  “FOHO Tell Dreams” in Ibiza and at the Danspace Project at Saint Marks Church (1984 -1985); “The Arc(h) Project” – a critical homage to Richard Serra’s “Tilted Arc”, and performances by the collective P.O.O.L. at the Pyramid Club and Art On The Beach, and Allied’s inauguration of the cabaret space at La Mamma in NYC. Inclusive of the project will be Allied’s history with ongoing educational components that involve work in schools from kindergarten to partners in education for the elderly.

The launch of the Allied Archival Project will focus on the works of artist Gordon Stokes Kurtti. Gordon died of AIDS related causes in 1985 at the age of 25. Kurtti’s prolific output – his crossing of visual art with literature, performance, and cinema – provides key relevance and a visceral centrality to the  aesthetic principles held by this organization, and its reverberated influences. The dynamic by which Kurtti lived and worked was an inspiration and a guide to all who knew him and worked with him. That his career was brief yet profoundly influential is a testament to the importance of the impact of the AIDS crisis on this and future generations. That so much has been done with so little, in the face of such diversity is a rallying cry and a galvanization of those surviving, those still  young, and generations to come.

A parallel focus to the Allied archival incentive is phase 2 of the Naked Eye Cinema archival project started this year under the direction of curator and archivist Jon Gartenberg president of Gartenberg Media Enterprises. Phase 1 of the Naked Eye Cinema archival project was  funded in part by Technical Assistance Program (TAP).
